WebChiseldon was a town that had been transformed by not one railway but two. Firstly, the opening of a major manufacturing and engineering works on the Great Western Railway at Swindon in the 1840s, three miles away, saw houses built for railway workers at Chiseldon, from where they would commute daily. WebNew army camp in Wiltshire Chiseldon Camp was constructed in September 1914, with 72 barrack huts being built by Chivers of Devizes. Initially named Draycot Camp as it was close to Draycot Foliat in Wiltshire. The name change originated from the Chiseldon postmark on letters send home from the camp.

Settlements in the area date back to prehistoric and Roman times, but Chiseldon itself was started by the Saxons. The Domesday Book of 1086 recorded a large settlement of 70 households at Chiseldene. At one point the nearby hamlet of Draycot Foliat was larger than Chiseldon. Chiseldon lies on one of the country's oldest highways, the Icknield Way, although this section of the road is more commonly known as The Ridgeway.
