I've used a variety of open source OSes for "data science" (loosely defined) over the past 15 years, including Debian, Slackware, OpenSuse, RedHat/Fedora/CentOS, Mandrake/Mandriva/Mageia, Ubuntu, Mint, Arch, FreeBSD, and NetBSD. Generally speaking I haven't found any one of these to be "better" than any other for data science.
