WebTable of contents ¶. Since reST does not have facilities to interconnect several documents, or split documents into multiple output files, Sphinx uses a custom directive to add relations between the single files the documentation is made of, as well as tables of contents. The toctree directive is the central element. WebTherefore, it's quite common that a README.md is already in place before starting with any proper documentation using Sphinx. Having to do 1 adjustment to Sphinx to support Markdown is faster than rewriting the whole README into Sphinx. Markdown is already supported and the only problem here is that it's outside the directory.
