He was looking to ease up on the intensity and explore what acoustic guitars and actual singing could bring to the bombast.

Come to think of it, that’s a pretty accurate way of summarizing the group, which began as a by-product of the no wave scene in New York, and even briefly featured Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore in its lineup.
